PBS Special: Voyage of the Lonely Turtle, airs Sunday, April 15

More oceanic adventures from PBS. They updated the site to include an educators guide.

VOYAGE OF THE LONELY TURTLE
Premieres Sunday, April 15th at 8 p.m.

A solitary loggerhead turtle in the middle of a vast ocean may not sound like an adventure film, but stick with her. Along her 9000-mile voyage to nest, our loggerhead tour guide in VOYAGE OF THE LONELY TURTLE encounters hammerhead sharks, deep ocean tempests, and man-made death traps in the form of fishing nets and hooks. Her body of well-suited armor and specialized adaptations for deep-ocean dwelling will help the sea turtle evade many of the ocean’s menaces. But this is just one set of challenges to overcome. Here is another: she must find her way across the Pacific, from Baja to a small stretch of beach in Japan, a precise location that she has been to just once before, as a two-inch hatchling, decades ago.

I don’t have TV, and you’re breaking my heart with all these great shows I can’t see ;-)

Shelly: Sorry about that. PBS has a number of Earth Day related programs airing this month. It’s one of the few reasons I keep a TV. But you can watch videoclips of most of them online by following the links.

BTW, for the botany enthusiasts out there, NOVA has a special coming up on flowering plants next week too.

Couldn’t watch the whole thing. Just as well, it seemed disappointing. Like the producers just went through a stock footage library and cobbled together a program. These kinds of shows are not easy to put together. But this one was seemed a tad ADD. Look, here are some whales. Now, here are some sharks. Green turtle. Bait ball. Aerial footage. More whales. Thin. Hate those kinds of docos. The narrator almost seemed fatigued by all the random changes in direction.

This documentary which I viewed in full was captivating. To humanly see the journey this particular creature takes was inspiring (yet heartbreaking at its conclusion). Thank you PBS for your relentless pursuit of this individual turtle.
