The Quest for the World’s Largest Calamari, the Giant Squid,” by Dr. Clyde Roper, Zoologist Emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. Are you going to liveblog it?? live video feed?

  2. 2 Jason

Doubt there will be any live feed. I was fortunate to get a chance to interview Dr. Roper last time he was at the lab. I hope to have some post-preso summary, maybe some pics. FWIW, Carl Zimmer is coming later in the lecture series, in March.

    Dear Dr.Clyde Roper,

My name is Claire E. Laffan and I am 9 years old. Do you know how we don’t have much experience on Giant Squid? Do you know how we tie cameras to dolphins?

I was thinking that we could tie a camera on a sperm whale. They are around Giant Squid a lot. I hope this helps. Please write back.

    Claire Laffan

PS - I want to be a marine biologist when I grow up.

Claire: your idea about tying cameras to sperm whales is a good one. Some scientist from National Geographic have tried that before. They called it their Crittercam. You can see the video on the National Geographic Web Site:

    Dear Dr. Clyde Roper,

My name is Alec and I am 5 years old. I want to learn about squids like you when I grow up. I wish I had a real pet squid that lived in a big aquarium tank in my room. I would be so happy to work with you. I wish I was a grown-up now. I hope that you can find all the stuff about giant squid. I hope you don’t quit!

    From, Alec Pitney

    Dr. Roper,

I love the giant squid and read books about it with my mommy and daddy. When I grow up I want to be a marine bioogist and study the giant squid, just like you. Keep studying and let us know if you find one alive. I am 4 years old.

    Thanks!
    Luke

PS- As Luke’s parents, we appreciate your work and your perseverence. Thanks to Luke’s interest in the sea and it’s creatures (particularly the giant squid) we get to learn right along with him.
