A while back I spoke with an oceanographer who worked on the Joint Committee on Ocean Policy. I wanted to share with you what he said about the best way of contacting a United States representative.
Many folks think a hand-written letter is the most meaningful and effective way to communicate. However, since the anthrax scare of 2001, all letters to congress now go through an additional screening step that can delay your letter by months. The irradiation process may also damage materials exposed to it, including paper. If the matter is urgent, he said that sending an email or fax is the best way of getting in touch. This runs counter to what I would have expected but makes sense in our digital age.
