Earthcast 2009

by jason on 2009/04/02

Got any plans for Earth Day (April 22) this year? For their part, the community over at Earthbridges.net will be holding a second annual Earthcast webcast that day. Starting at midnight GMT, teachers, students, researchers and participants from around the world will be speaking live for 24 hours about their Earth Day activities. You can get involved. Timeslots are still available. If you have a story you’d like to share or have a class that would like to participate, contact the organizers at Earthbridges to see how you can join in.

Earthcast 2009 Teaser video

To promote the Earthcast, I made this short teaser video. It was my first machinima video. I used the 3D world of Second Life to create the scene. I also used a 3D mouse to allow for fluid flycam movements through the virtual world. If you need an input device with six degrees of freedon, I highly recommend getting one of these. I was able to capture the images by simply using the SnapZ Pro screen capture. While not completely polished, the video came out nicely enough. I was able to find a version of Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra from the Open Source Audio project.

Ocean Hour

Last year I spent an hour speaking to Rick MacPherson and Karen James (and almost Kevin Zelnio) for Earthcast 2008. I am not currently planning on doing an Ocean Hour this year, but if there is enough interest from the community, I may be able to pull it together. Let me know if you are interested.
