Two years ago I got the opportunity to dive the famous Great Blue Hole in Belize. Some of the photos that make up the masthead for this blog were taken during that trip. The Blue Hole is a top destinations on many scuba divers’ life list. It is a geological anomaly located about 50 miles off the coast of Belize, a remnant of a limestone cave system that formed when sea levels were lower. When the ocean returned, the cave roof collapsed, making a near perfect, 1,300 ft circle of deep blue against the turquoise waters of Lighthouse Reef. It is over 400 ft to the floor of the hole, well beyond the safe limits of most divers.

Sadly, 7NEWS in Belize reports that one diver made it nearly all the way to the bottom. The remains were found around 300 ft down and are thought to be that of a doctor from Miami. A team of technical divers made the discovery while filming a documentary. They were not equipped to retrieve the body but recovered the camera of the dead diver. The serial number was traced back and authorities found out it was reported lost seven years ago. They are still figuring out how to proceed.

In hindsight, I was a bit cavalier on my Blue Hole dive. Because it is a deep dive in the middle of a shallow reef, it is easy to take the challenges of the trip for granted. But had anything gone wrong, if I or my buddy lost consciousness, there really would not have been an easy way to recover and we would of ended up keeping company with the doctor.

Machaca Hill

We stopped by this rainforest canopy lodge. While the amenities look incredible, the $3000 fee per night is more than a bit out of our range.

Just some Christmas day images from my trip to Belize.

Better Belize It

The Sleeping Giant

I know how much many of you like the snow, and it looks like much of the United States will enjoy a white Christmas this year. While you warm your chestnuts, I will be heading down to Central America for the holidays to visit with family. But I hope to share as much of the tropical heat with you as I can. As time and wifi allow, I will upload updates from the field.

One of the destinations is the vista pictured here. The plan is to spend Christmas near the mountains of the Sleeping Giant in central Belize. The range is so-called because in person it really does look like a large man in repose (but maybe not so much in the picture). That is his brow, nose and chin to the right and his heaving chest in the center.

I may also get a chance to go diving too and still hold out hope of spotting the elusive Cozumel toadfish (Sanopus johnsoni) someday. It truly is a splendid looking creature in photographs and Belize is supposed to be the right place to look.

In case I don’t get to update soon, here is wishing all you fine readers a Happy Cephalopodmas, Merry Fishmas, Splendid Squidmas, a Heebo Tarvu Day, Happy Monkey, Happy Holothuriday, and a Scintillating Solstice (remember, axial tilt is the reason for the seasons)!

Life Photo Meme: Smart

Underwater shot of two groovy brain corals [240x240, 40K]
Belize Brain Corals (Diploria sp. and Colpophyllia sp.) taken circa January 2006.

The Life Photo Meme theme this week is Smart.

This is a photo of some brain coral that I took on a dive in Belize, circa January 2006. There are two genra here. In the front is a groove-brained coral (Diploria sp.) and in the back is a boulder brain coral (Colpophyllia sp.). I never could get these two straight during my QUantitative Ecological Survey Techniques course.

They may not be especially intelligent, but I think they look pretty sharp.
